6 Signs You May Be An Overprotective Parent!
Yesterday, we talked about the effects of being an overprotective parent. We received several comments wanting to know what an overprotective parent looks like, so đĄđđŤđ đđŤđ đđĄđ đ đŹđ˘đ đ§đŹ đ˛đ¨đŽ đŚđđ˛ đđ đđ§ đ¨đŻđđŤđŠđŤđ¨đđđđđ˘đŻđ đŠđđŤđđ§đ!đâŁ

1ď¸âŁ. đđ°đŻđľđłđ°đđđŞđŻđ¨ đ¤đŠđ°đŞđ¤đŚđ´ – If youâre making decisions for your teen without allowing them to think through the options themselves. Of course we can advise them, but ultimately, we want to encourage our teens to be independent thinkers with their own confident opinions.âŁ
âŁ
2ď¸âŁ. đđŠđŚđđľđŚđłđŞđŻđ¨ đ§đłđ°đŽ đ§đ˘đŞđđśđłđŚ – It can be tempting to step in and ârescueâ your teen from a bad grade or injured ego. Teens are resilient, only if we give them the opportunity to rebound. Success is great, but teens wonât truly thrive until they learn to overcome day-to-day failures.âŁ
âŁ
3ď¸âŁ. đđˇđŚđłđłđŚđ˘đ¤đľđŞđŻđ¨ đľđ° đ§đ˘đŞđđśđłđŚđ´ – If youâre enraged over the sporadic bad grade or dismayed when your teen gets rejected from an opportunity, you need to take a deep breath and be like Elsa – let it go!âŁ
âŁ
4ď¸âŁ. đđŚđ˘đł đ°đ§ đŞđŻđŤđśđłđş – Do you warn your teen to watch their fingers every time they shut a cabinet door or gasp when they occasionally trip over their own two feet? As long as a teen isnât in danger, you should try to bite your tongue from time to time, or the training wheels may never come off.âŁ
âŁ
5ď¸âŁ. đđŻđľđŚđŻđ´đŚ đ§đ°đ¤đśđ´ đ°đŻ đ˘đ¤đŠđŞđŚđˇđŚđŽđŚđŻđľ – If youâre so focused on your teensâs accomplishments that you donât take the time to celebrate them, you (and potentially your teen) are missing out. Focusing on measurable achievements could be detrimental to your teenâs mental well-being.âŁ
âŁ
6ď¸âŁ. đđšđľđłđŚđŽđŚ đłđŚđ¸đ˘đłđĽđ´ đ˘đŻđĽ đ´đľđłđŞđ¤đľ đłđśđđŚđ´ – Resorting to outlandish rewards to motivate your teen and harsh punishments to deter them is another common sign of overprotective parenting. You want your teen to be motivated by their own internal drive!
