3 Great Ways You Can Engage As A Parent
𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬! 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰…? 🤔
Parental engagement makes it far more likely that our children will avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as sexual risk and substance use.
You might be asking, how do I effectively engage with my teens? We got you covered! Here are 3 great ways you can engage as a parent.👇
1️⃣. 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 – Teens whose parents know where they are and the people they are with are less likely to get caught up in the wrong crowd or put in unsafe situations. Remember the difference between monitoring vs. controlling, though.
2️⃣. 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 – Teens who have talked with their parents about sex are more likely to delay having sex, and to practice safe sex when doing so. And those who have had conversations on substance abuse and drugs, are far more likely to stay away from them.
3️⃣. 𝘍𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 – Teens who have close, stable relationships with their parents are more likely to come to them with a problem. These topics often times include: sex, alcohol, drugs, and peer pressure. Being connected to your teen helps them feel safe and heard when talking about their feelings and issues.
Being a teen or young adult is possibly one of the most difficult, confusing times in a person’s life. As parents, we need to make sure our children are educated, and feel safe talking to us about these uncomfortable topics.
