Parents, Did You Know?
The only 100% guaranteed way to avoid STIs/STDs is to not have any kind of sexual contact — like vaginal, anal, or oral sex, or skin-to-skin genital touching — with another person.
At the Yunion we focus on a Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) approach. Some teach how to reduce the risk which has it’s benefits for active youth. We teach skills and techniques to avoid the risk completely if that’s the you person’s choice.
We’ve seen that after our SRA program cycles some of our participants didn’t know that waiting and or delaying sexual intercourse was even an option.
Despite beliefs, more teens are waiting and avoiding the risk while they are still young. Among teen females aged 15-19, 42% had ever had sex, and among teen males, the percent was 44%. (Source CDC)
These percentages have gradually declined since 1988 when 51% of female and 60% of male teens had ever had sex. (Source CD).
