PARENT OPEN HOUSE/PARENTAL ADVISORY TRAINING (MANDATORY)

WHAT: Mandatory Parent Open House/Parental Advisory Training
WHEN: Saturday, July 7th, 2018, from 12PM-noon to 3PM EST

DETAILS: Parents are encouraged to come “solo” and leave participants at home. If it is absolutely necessary to bring students, we will have some “light” activities in an adjacent room while parents are in their open house and training.

Why Mandatory?

In order for students to receive a scholarship, it is mandatory for all parents to attend the Parent Training & Orientation. You will not only receive vital information about camp, but you will also be educated on the current trends in mass media that affects youth today through our “Parental Advisory” Training. Upon completion of the training, you will receive the scholarship award letter.

Please note: failure to attend will result in the revoking of the scholarship, and the balance of the original camp price of $400 will be owed.

Now Serving Middle-School Students Ages 11-14.

Due to the intensive instruction and fast paced learning environment of our camp, we are now enrolling students who are age 11-14. Students must be entering into grade six or higher in the Fall of 2018 and proof of age is required.

Students will be required to demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow and are expected to be timely, professional, and adaptable to a fast-paced environment. Only students with a strong interest in music and the arts should apply for this camp. Enrollment is first come first serve so we encourage you to submit as early as possible.

The Keys 2 Life Performing Arts Camp is focused on the development of the whole child. The sessions take a multi-faceted approach to include music and artistic development as well as youth development.

All Keys 2 Life sessions are principle and prevention based. This session is on the life application of song writing. Facilitator Charyse “Mahogany Jones” Bailey stresses to Keys 2 Life students at George Washington Carver the importance of creating a “life song” that will convey to others their true character and not what the media portrays them to be.

PROGRAM EXPERIENCE

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Keys 2 Life Performing Arts Camp is an intensive 4-week program that serves as an expansion of The Yunion’s Keys 2 Life Mentoring through Music prevention and life skills after-school curriculum. Keys 2 Life, established in 2010, is a music based program that teaches prevention of and abstention from negative experiences such as substance abuse, pre-marital sex, and teen pregnancy by targeting middle school students with a strong interest in the arts and music industry.

The camp will take place at Wayne State University’s Campus in the College of Fine Performing and Communication Arts. In the heart of Midtown Detroit, the location will allow students to take advantage of some of the city’s most riches assets of culture and the arts! Participants will participate in educational and cultural field trips such as visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Institute of Music Education, and the Motown Museum. Programming will run 5 days a week, Monday-Friday for four consecutive weeks from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Latch-key is available from 8:00 a.m – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Keys 2 Life camp experience will provide participants with evidence-based prevention curriculum while encouraging, educating, and empowering youth through key principles in music, poetry, and dance. Returning students will participate in leadership development training and/or prevention and life skills curriculum. Students will be placed with a professionally trained instructor that will help nurture their talents and abilities in their specific area of interest. Those who commit to this program will be enriched socially, academically, psychologically and of course artistically.

DO YOU REQUIRE CAMP PAYMENTS TO BE MADE UP FRONT?

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

HOW MUCH IS THE SCHOLARSHIP?

Starting this year in 2019, there are two types of scholarships available:

Full Scholarship: If awarded, the total cost of the camp is paid for your child. You must be a Wayne County resident and meet certain eligibility criteria.
Partial Scholarship: If awarded, a $400 scholarship is applied towards your total camp costs.

New & returning students are eligible to apply for a scholarship. However, SCHOLARSHIPS ARE LIMITED. There are only 75 available this year. If you are interested in a scholarship, apply ASAP as they are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.

If you are not awarded a scholarship, the camp fee will be the normal $600.

HOW MUCH DOES THE CAMP COST?

Without a scholarship, the price of our intensive, high-quality camp experience costs a total of $600.00. You may pay full price of $600 or apply for a scholarship on the online registration form.

In conjunction with area sponsors (listed at the bottom of this page), The Yunion is able to award scholarships to select parents. Parents can save even more (in addition to the scholarship) by registering for camp early.

WHAT IF I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS OR WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION?

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN’T PICK UP MY CHILD ON TIME AT THE END OF THE CAMP DAY?

Please call us to inform us of your late arrival as soon as possible. While we do understand that “life happens” it is important that every child is picked up promptly at 3:00 p.m. each day, unless you have arranged for your child to attend latchkey.

Any child not picked up by 4:05 p will be charged $1 per minute following. No child should be dropped off before 7:55am as the building will not have supervision available until latch key starts at 8am.

In the instance that late pick up is repetitive, your child may be dis-enrolled from the program (without refund) due to non-compliance.

WHAT IS THE REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY?

Refunds will be processed up to June 1st. Due to the significantly reduced cost of the camp, please note that once camp begins, we cannot process refunds or deductions if students are absent for any reason. There will be no exceptions to this policy. In addition, parents must attend the mandatory parent orientation and training to receive any granted scholarships. Failure to do so will forfeit your scholarship. However, parents can still enroll their child at the regular $600 cost. Please note there will be no refunds of any payments made towards registration.

WHAT IS THE SCHOLARSHIP BEING OFFERED AND HOW CAN MY CHILD BE ELIGIBLE?

Scholarships are offered for the Keys 2 Life Camp by our generous sponsors to help offset the cost for parents in order to reduce financial barriers that may prevent youth from participating in a quality summer camp experience. The amount of the scholarship is $500.00, which means out of pocket, the first 75 parents only have to pay $100.00 for the full 4 weeks of camp. Both new and returning students are eligible for a scholarship this year. However, there are only 75 scholarships available and they are given on a first come-first serve basis. Registration must be completed in order to secure a scholarship. Click here to apply for a scholarship.

WHAT IS YOUR REGISTRATION POLICY & PROCEDURE?

You will need to reserve your child’s place in the program by completing the registration form and paying the fee in full or participating in the weekly payment plan option. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required. You may register by mailing or hand delivering completed registration forms and payment in the form of cash, money order, or cashiers check. Preference will be given to students who have never participated in the Yunion’s Keys 2 Life or S.W.A.G. (Student’s with Awareness and Goals) programming. However, there will be a limited number of spots reserved for students that have taken part in our programs in the past. Proof of age is also required when registering. Acceptable documentation includes a birth certificate or a current school transcript or class schedule that has the child’s date of birth on it. If registering by mail or hand-delivery, please attach a copy of the age verification documentation with your forms. If you are an on-line registrant, please send proof of age documentation via mail, hand-delivery, or fax at 313-870-9772.
