Quick Parenting Tip Tuesday!
𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 💡
Parents, when complimenting your child… get your “but” out of the way!
You probably think we’re crazy 🤪 but just let us explain:
𝗪𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐛𝐮𝐭”, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭.
The child will focus on the last part of the sentence, and all the good you stated before will be forgotten. Yes, there are times we need to politely critique them – just don’t do that during a compliment. 👀
If you have to give constructive criticism, use the Sandwich Method, where you lead with something positive, followed by your constructive criticism, then followed by something else that’s positive or reiterating the initial positive statement.
There are plenty of ways to critique or improve our children, but sometimes, it’s better to give a true compliment!
What was the last thing you complimented your child on?👇
